Ruffle-Ribbed Scarf
[Accidental] Ruffle Scarf
Early on in my knitting odyssey, I was thrilled by the concept of ribbing (I was still just a padawan learner, like I said). And so I was daring enough to buy a gorgeous Noro yarn and knit myself a scarf. I began with a 4×4 rib, and after a few inches I found myself accidentally engaging in a 2×2 rib. At first I panicked at the prospect of having to rip back (horrors!). But upon closer inspection, I realized that the mistake I made actually resulted in a delightful ruffle! I continued in 2×2 ribbing until I was almost out of yarn, and switched back to the 4×4 rib for the final few rows. A happy accident indeed!
Materials Needed:
- 2 balls Noro worsted weight yarn
- 1 pair size US 8 bamboo needles
- Measuring tape
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge: not vital to the success of this project
Size: One size fits all
Instructions:
- Cast on 40 stitches (sounds like a lot, but the ribbing will contract it)
- *Knit 4 stitches, purl 4 stitches* (4×4 rib) repeat to end.
- Continue in established pattern for approx 2 inches or 10 rows.
- Next row: *knit 2, purl 2* repeat to end (establishing 2×2 rib).
- Continue to knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches for approximately 72 inches.
- Next row: *knit 4, purl 4* repeat to end (re-establishing 4×4 rib).
- Continue in established pattern for approx 2 inches or 10 rows.
- Bind off all stitches, weave in ends.
Proudly parade around town wearing your latest achievement!

Since knitt tueday at four is a no go, Robert and Jules are enjoying your Dana must knit at the apple store Encinitas, on an ipad
Dana:
what color of Noro yarn did you use for this scarf?
Thank you.
Hi! I can’t remember and of course threw away the label. It was one of my earliest projects, when I was rogue and irresponsible w/ my materials and notes! My deepest apologies…But ANY color will be gorgeous on YOU, I’m sure!!!
What a nice surprise! I was looking on the web for a pattern to knit a ruffled scarf. After visiting many websites I came upon yours. ” That’s my niece, DANA!” It was meant to be! I am going to knit your scarf. I’ll send a photo when it’s finished.
Happy Birthday, Happy New Year!
Love,
Aunt Eal
