Knitting As Social Action

by Dana Mekler on May 10, 2010

Knitters and Crocheters UNITE!  We have a chance to do something extraordinary for our communities, and I promise it will be fun, even if it does mean setting aside our personal uber-important projects for a day.

Every community has organizations that distribute basic essentials to the underprivileged or unfortunate.  My Knitting Circle will be knitting and crocheting blankets, hats, scarves, slipper socks, etc. to be distributed to seniors and low-income families. We will use our stash yarn (recycling!) or donated yarn to accomplish this task and compile our efforts during our knit-in on May 16th, which is the universally mandatory community service day for Jews, also known as Mitzvah Day! But you don’t have to be Jewish to perform a mitzvah, or good deed, and since Knitting is a Virtue (see post by same name), anyone can knit for the cause!  And then handknits can be given out to all of the afflicted souls currently without them!

But there is bonus community service in this Mitzvah project – the gathering of generous souls to do an absolute good.  This is contagious, and the Knitting Circle will naturally draw more altruists over time.  We will alternate our selfish knitting aspirations with occasional outbursts of generosity (do not underestimate the heavy task it is for some knitters to set their work aside, mid-project, to begin something they will only be able to brag about in concept.  Not all of us are knit-shifters – see Knitisms Du Jour).

Get your mitzvah on! And all will be right with the world!  xo Dana (must knit! for the cause!)

Dear Dana,
I loved viewing your website. I only wish your knitting circle was here in Plainview, NY. I belong to one at my condo but we don’t have YOU to entertain us with your funny stories or creative vocabulary and your beautiful personality. (also beautiful face)
I’m looking forward to visiting you and your family this August.
Love,
Aunt Eal
PS: How do you knit with your cat sitting on your lap????

Could you teach me how to knit an all in one bodysuit with booties for Uncle A. I want attach to the back a 5′x9′ matching piece that could at any moment be used as a wrap -around blanket when he suddenly dozes off. The length should be long enough to be turned over the ends like a blintz. I am bringing him out to San Diego for a fitting. I hope that this project won’t have me commiting kniticide
