It was bound to happen, especially by his fourteenth birthday (damn, I’m OLD!) My son now towers over me at nearly 6-ft tall, and looks more like a man, or a tree with a fro, than a teen. He’s a good kid, not spoiled, works for his own money, and thus has many of the amenities that are apparent requirements of prevalent teens. This includes an iTouch.
The more things change the more they stay the same: what were Flock of Seagulls and Walkmans in 1985 (I’m old enough to remember 8-tracks too. OLD!) is now Flobots and MP3s. But what’s the same is that you can’t separate a teen from his music. They all grow up, it can’t be helped. But a clever mom leaves her mark, lingers in her teen’s heart, in discreet, almost subliminal ways.
A shameless knitter, however, skips the inconspicuous and gets right to the bells and whistles. Clever, yes. Subtle, no way. I want his whole High School to see that he’s proud to love his momma! So I will suffer the iTouch /iPod/iThings with ear buds in all day, as long as he sports the iBeanie I knitted him with aplomb, even if peppered with some angst!
